Russian · 1873–1943
One of the last great Romantic pianist-composers, Rachmaninoff paired sweeping lyricism with formidable virtuosity. After leaving Russia in 1917 he built a celebrated career as a touring pianist across Europe and the United States. His preludes, moments musicaux, and études-tableaux remain cornerstones of the advanced piano repertoire.
A few of Rachmaninoff's late works are still under US copyright and can't be offered here yet — notably the Variations on a Theme of Corelli (Op. 42, 1931), the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (Op. 43, 1934), the Symphonic Dances (Op. 45), and the 1931 revision of the Second Sonata. Everything published through 1917 — the Op. 3, 16, 23, 32, 33 and 39 sets, and the original 1913 Second Sonata — is public domain in the US and is included here as it's digitized.
